MOUSIE – getting a great reception in US film festivals
This stunningly beautiful short film was something I was lucky enough to be a part of making a little while ago.
It follows the fragile existence of Hélène, a seven-year-old Roma girl, during the horrific period of Jew and Romani ‘cleansing’ by Hitler prior to the Olympics in Berlin 1936.
Hélène hides in a decaying old Weimar Club, helped by dancer Katharina, but despite her precarious position she can’t resist sneaking about the club like a little mouse seeing everything from the shadows, including the arrival of awkward SS Hauptführer Otto who recently conscripted into the army.
The film was directed by David Bartlett and produced by Will Poole. The crew were a collaboration of fantastically talented professionals who all believed in the project and it was another opportunity for me to work with my very good friend and colleague Paul Kirsop DOP, not to mention my daughter Hannah Vivancos-Drury on one of her very first jobs in the industry helping out my fabulous jib tech and best mate Ben Reason.
Earlier this year Mousie ran as part of the 29th Woods Hole Film Festival in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA where it had great success and received a rave revue from the legendary film critic Joyce Kulhawik. And recent news is that it will now go to Terre Haute, Indiana, USA having been selected for the “Indy Film Fest”, running 13th – 23rd August this year.
I wish it all the success it deserves!
